The Environmental Management Act establishes the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change for the purpose of ensuring the protection and proper management of the environment and the promotion of sustainable development. The functions of the Ministry include matters relating to climate change, ozone depletion, movement or disposal of hazardous wastes and chemicals, desertification and drought relief, preservation of wetlands and management and protection of coastal areas, conservation of endangered species, preservation of biological diversity, and aspects of the environmental management of international waters.

Vertido v. Philippines, CEDAW/C/46/D/18/2008

The author of the communication claimed that she suffered discrimination as defined in the Convention on Elimination of Discrimination against Women when the court dismissed her rape complaint on the basis of gender-based myths and stereotypes. The Committee found that there was a failure in investigating, prosecuting, and punishing the perpetrator, and in providing redress to Vertido, due in part to the stereotypes and gender-based myths relied upon in the judgment. Stereotyping negatively affects a woman's right to a fair trial and the judiciary must not create or perpetuate inflexible standards of what someone should or should not have done when confronted with a rape situation.
