Humaira Mehmood was prosecuted under the Zina ordinance after marrying a man without the consent of her parents. The parents intended to give her in marriage to another man, in exchange for her brother's marriage to said man's sister. Ruling in favor of Humaira, the court cited Article 16 of the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), which provides for the right of women to family life on the basis of equality with men.
