Treaty Between the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh and the Government of the Republic of India on Sharing of the Ganga/Ganges Waters at Farakka

The Ganges Treaty illustrates that a legally binding agreement is not the same as meaningful cooperation between the parties. The treaty favours the hydro-hegemonic state (India) and solidifies the status quo. It does not create a community of interest in the shared management of the river and has left Bangladesh with numerous concerns and unresolved issues.

1996 Protocol to the London Convention

The 1996 Protocol to the London Convention supersedes the Convention as between Contracting Parties to the Protocol who are also parties to the London Convention. The Protocol obliges Contracting Parties to prohibit dumping of wastes or matter other than those mentioned in its Annex 1. For those not mentioned in Annex 1, a permit is required for their disposal from the State's designated authority.

United Nations (UN), Report of the Fourth World Conference on Women, Beijing, 4–15 September 1995, A/CONF.177/20/Rev.1 (1996)

The Fourth World Conference on Women adopted the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. The Beijing Declaration reaffirms the commitment to equal rights and the inherent human dignity of women and men, and other purposes and principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international human rights instruments, in particular the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, as well as the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women and the Declaration on the Right to Development.

Vellore Citizen Welfare Forum vs. Union of India, AIR 1996 SC 2715

The petition was filed against tanneries which have been causing pollution by enormous discharge of untreated effluent in the State of Tamil Nadu. The court found that the leather industry has indeed been causing environmental degradation, but also acknowledged that said industry is vital to the economy. Sustainable development is necessary as a balancing concept between ecology and development.

Mahakali Treaty 1996

The Mahakali Treaty basically aims at an integrated development of water resources in the Mahakali River and has been finalized on the basis of equal partnership. The Mahakali originates in Nepal and forms the border between the two countries for a considerable distance. The scope of the Treaty covers the Sarada Barrage, the Tanakpur Barrage and the proposed Pancheswar project. From the Sarada Barrage, the Treaty gives Nepal 28.3 cumec (1000 cusec) of water in the wet season and 4.25 cumec (150 cusec) in the dry season. This quantity is to be supplied from the Tanakpur Barrage if the Sarada Barrage turns non-functional.

State of Punjab vs. Gurmit Singh, (1996) 2 SCC 384 (India)

A girl under 18 was abducted and raped, around the time she was taking her matriculation examinations. After she was released by her abductors, she took a scheduled examination and did not tell anyone there of the rape. The court held that in sexual offenses delay in the lodging of the complaint can be due to a variety of reasons particularly the reluctance of the prosecutrix or her family members to go to the police and complain about the incident which concerns the reputation of the prosecutrix and the honor of her family.
