On 11–15 March 2024, ADB's Law and Policy Reform Program collaborated with the Royal Academy for Justice of Cambodia to provide comprehensive training for judges in handling climate and environmental law litigation. This workshop marked a significant innovation in judicial education on environmental law because it focused on the craft of adjudication, complementing previous training on climate and environmental law.

ADB's Law and Policy Reform Program, in partnership with the Pacific Private Sector Development Initiative (PSDI) and the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) assisted with Papua New Guinea's (PNG) enactment of two arbitration laws which are expected to attract foreign direct investment and international private climate finance.

ADB Strengthens Capacity of Timorese Public Defenders to Handle Gender-Based Violence Cases
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Office of the Public Defender of Timor-Leste (ODP) recently concluded specialized workshops in Bali, Indonesia, to strengthen the capacity of Timorese public defenders in handling gender-based violence (GBV) cases. Held in August 2025, the training equipped defenders with practical skills to balance the rights of survivors and the accused in sensitive and complex cases.

Asian Development Bank (ADB) President Takehiko Nakao today formally launched the Asian Judges Network on Environment (AJNE) at the ADB headquarters in Manila, Philippines, creating a platform to generate knowledge on environment challenges among judiciaries and the legal community in Asia and the Pacific.

Walk the Talk: A Sustainable Workshop for Bhutan’s Judiciary

On 19-20 July 2018, the Workshop on Environmental Adjudication for the Judiciary of Bhutan was held in the capital Thimphu. ADB’s Office of the General Counsel organized the event, in partnership with UN Environment and the US Environmental Protection Agency. Over 50 judges and court officers from the High Court and all districts courts completed the interactive workshop.

Unshackling the chains

The world mourns the passing of Nelson Mandela, an icon of peace, freedom, justice and reconciliation. We are grateful for his inspiring example of unflinching courage, compassion, humility and forgiveness. He leaves a world racked with conflict and suffering. But, perhaps his death and his meaningful life would challenge us to take on the responsibility of leaving this world a better place for the children and those yet unborn, as he did.

The Third South Asia Judicial Roundtable on Environmental Justice commenced at the Central Bank today with President Mahinda Rajapaksa as the Chief Guest. Chief Justice Mohan Peiris and ministers were among the participants.
