The first regional Train-the-Trainers (TTT) program at ADB headquarters comprised of university professors and lecturers from Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, and Sri Lanka was delivered using various teaching methodologies, including lectures, case studies, role playing, small group interactions, guest lecturers, multi-media materials and on-the-ferry class room instruction down Pasig River to demonstrate the field trip as a teaching methodology and to discuss the local environmental issues. Environmental lawyer and activist Tony Oposa was invited as a special guest speaker.

UNIDROIT Knowledge Sharing Event

A high-level delegation from the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT) visited ADB headquarters and a special session was held with ADB staff to shed light on important international private law developments relating to private sector development, trade and sustainable development. In particular, the UNIDROIT experts covered legal instruments that can help increase access to credit especially in the agriculture sector and discuss the emergence of digital assets and their implications. ADB and UNIDROIT considered the prospects for these legal instruments in the Asia and the Pacific context and explored collaboration opportunities.

TTT Country Focal Points Virtual Meeting

ADB’s TTT Country Focal Points (CFPs) comprising senior professors from 12 countries across Asia convened on 25 October for a 3rd Virtual Roundtable to discuss developments around environmental and climate change laws and legal education. They shared their efforts to safeguard environmental laws as their countries recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, including actions against increased plastic pollution, and projects posing large-scale deforestation and disaster-risks.

Philippine Legal Education Board 2nd Environmental Law Faculty Training

In 2021, upon the request of the LEB, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the United
Nations Environment Programme, and the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law, supported
a 12-week capacity development program for more than 100 legal educators from across the
Philippines. This Environmental Law Teachers Online Training Program ran from
September 22 to December 8, 2021, and covered curriculum development and best practice
in environmental and climate change law teaching.
