The fourth ASEAN Chief Justices’ Roundtable on the role of the judiciary in environmental protection opened on December 13th in Hanoi by the Supreme People’s Court of Vietnam with the support of the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Asian Judges Create Network on Environment

An Asian Judges Network on Environment has been formally launched in Manila, marking a new stage of cooperation among justices charged with enforcing environmental laws and helping to preserve Asia’s natural capital. The three-day Second Asian Judges Symposium on Environment held last week drew eminent judges and representatives of courts, environment ministries, prosecutor’s offices, the legal profession, and civil society from the Asia Pacific region and beyond.

The world mourns the passing of Nelson Mandela, an icon of peace, freedom, justice and reconciliation. We are grateful for his inspiring example of unflinching courage, compassion, humility and forgiveness. He leaves a world racked with conflict and suffering. But, perhaps his death and his meaningful life would challenge us to take on the responsibility of leaving this world a better place for the children and those yet unborn, as he did.

For two days, from 8.30 a.m. to 6 p.m. ASEAN Chief Justices or their representatives had fruitful discussions on environmental issues with special reference to their respective Judiciaries. It was my second attendance after the Melaka Roundtable. The Bangkok meeting was a success. Participations were excellent. Personally I learned quite a lot after hearing the experiences of the judiciaries in the other ASEAN countries.
