Basic Law of Macau
Macao, including the Macao Peninsula, Taipa Island and Coloane Island, has been part of the territory of China since ancient times; it was gradually occupied by Portugal after the mid 16th century. On 13 April 1987, the Chinese and Portuguese Governments signed the Joint Declaration on the Question of Macao, affirming that the Government of the People' s Republic of China will resume the exercise of sovereignty over Macao with effect from 20 December 1999, thus fulfilling the long cherished common aspiration of the Chinese people for the recovery of Macao.
Environmental Protection Law (1999) and Implementing Decree (2002)
The Environmental Protection Law specifies necessary principles, rules and measures for managing, monitoring, restoring and protecting the environment in order to protect public, natural resources and biodiversity, and to ensure the sustainable socio-economic development of the nation. Article 2 defines "environment", whereas article 3 defines "environment protection". Basic principles of environment protection are set out in article 5. Chapter II concerns prevention of environmental degradation and the protection, exploitation and use of natural resources.
Constitution of the Lao People's Democratic Republic
The Constitution consists of 98 articles divided in 11 Chapters: The Political Regime (1); The Socio-Economic Regime (2); (New) National Defence and Security (3); Fundamental Rights and Obligations of Citizens (4); National Assembly (5); The President of the State (6); Government (7); The Local Administration (8); People's Courts and Public Prosecutor (9); Language, Script, National Emblem, National Flag, National Anthem, National Day, Currency and Capital City (10); Final Provisions (11).
Environmental Protection Law (Law 2/1999)

The Science, Technology and Environment Agency shall issue general regulations on procedures and methods for environmental impact assessment but each sector that is responsible for the development projects and activities shall issue its own regulations on procedures and methods for environmental impact assessment, based on such general regulation of EIA (art. 8).
Land Law (1997)
This Law makes provision for the management and use of various types of land, including forestry and agricultural land. Land of Lao PDR shall be under the ownership of the national community and all organizations and individuals shall have the obligation to protect land to ensure that there is no soil erosion, land subsidence and soil degradation.
Water and Water Resources Law (1996)
This Law governs the management, rational exploitation, development and use of water and water resources. The ownership of all water is vested in the people of the Lao Peoples Democratic Republic as a whole. The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry is responsible for the survey and inventory of water resources (art. 8).
