Environment Conservation Levy Act (2008)

The purpose of this Act is to ensure environment conservation by imposing a levy on specified items, owned by individuals or businesses, which are considered harmful to the environment.The Act empowers the Central Environmental Authority to enable the process of recovering this levy.

Disaster Management Act (2005)

The purpose of this Act is to protect human life and the environment of Sri Lanka from the consequences of natural disasters by preparing national policies and plans and by appointing centrally coordinated committees and institutions to give effect to such policies and plans. The Act provides for the establishment of a National Council for Disaster Management and defines its internal composition. Functions of the Council include: formulate a national policy and program on the management of disasters; prepare and formulate a National Disaster Management Plan and a National Emergency Operation Plan; facilitate emergency response, recovery, relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction; and direct, coordinate and monitor the activities of the Disaster Management Centre established under this Act.

Petroleum Resources Act (2003)

The purpose of this Act is to regulate the exploration and recovery of petroleum resources in Sri Lanka.Ownership of all petroleum resources shall vest in the State. The Act provides for the establishment of the Petroleum Resources Development Committee (PRDC) and for its composition, powers and functions. In order to conduct petroleum operations one must enter into a Petroleum Resources Agreement with the State in respect of defined exploration blocks and in case the contractor shall discover petroleum resources the PRDC shall issue Development Licences for their recovery, storage, transportation and sale as provided for in the text. Other provisions include: functions of the Secretariat headed by the Direct-General of Petroleum Resources; fiscal provisions; and offences.

National Environmental (Amendment) Act (Act 53/2000)

This Act amends the National Environmental Act, 1980. Section 23A of the principal Act shall be substituted with a new section which empowers the Minister to determine activities in respect of which a licence is required under this Act. Minor amendments have also been made to section 23B subsection (2) paragraph (c) and to section 23BB subsection (2).

Plant Protection Act (1999)

The present Act provides for the prevention and eradication of whatever organism (plant, bacteria, virus, algae, fungi etc. etc.) or weed potentially harmful that could be introduced or spread in the Country; for restriction or ban on the importation of plants , their products and organisms: for the importation of certain pests to the sole aim of research; for testing and subsequently quarantine, disinfect and clean or destroy if deemed necessary every plant, product , package or container that has been infested; for fixing terms and fee for quarantined items; for restricting or ban the cultivation of any plant over a determined period of time in any location in the country; for compliance with safety of all plants and their products produced in Sri Lanka and ready to be exported.

National Environmental Act (2000)

This Act amends the National Environmental Act, 1980. Section 23A of the principal Act shall be substituted with a new section which empowers the Minister to determine activities in respect of which a licence is required under this Act. Minor amendments have also been made to section 23B subsection (2) paragraph (c) and to section 23BB subsection (2).

National Environmental (Amendment) Act (Act 56/1988)

The long title of the National Environmental Act 1980 is amended by substituting for the words 'for the protection and management of the environment' the words 'for the protection, management and enhancement of the environment, for the regulation, maintenance and control of the quality of the environment; for the prevention, abatement and control of pollution'. Further amendments are made by inserting (a) Part IVA on environmental protection; (b) Part IVB on environmental quality; (c) Part IVC on approval of projects and submission of environmental impact assessment reports.
