Rukkiya Iqbal vs. Faisal Ahmad, Cr. Petition No. 457/2017 (Pakistan)

A woman was badly beaten by her husband. She fled from their home and filed a complaint for physical abuse, as well as emotional, psychological, and verbal abuse. The court declared that domestic violence was a human rights violation, stating “[The law] was enacted to provide protection to the weakest classes [of] society, i.e., women and children, as normally we [carry] a presumption of living [in] a ‘male-dominant society’ where [the] aggrieved even does not dare to tell about ‘domestic violence’ because of threats of being abandoned or dispossessed/removed from [the] household.”
