Paris Agreement
The 2015 Paris Agreement, an agreement within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), aims to enhance the implementation of the UNFCCC and its objective. The agreement sets the target for the increase in global temperature average to "well below 2 ℃ above preindustrial levels" and a 1.5 ℃ temperature cap. The Agreement does not set a quantitative emission reduction target to achieve its temperature goal. Rather, it sets the qualitative objective for reaching global peaking of greenhouse gas emissions as soon as possible, while recognizing that peaking will take longer for developing country Parties, as well as undertake rapid reductions thereafter following the best available science. Thus, it obliges each party to prepare, communicate and maintain successive nationally determined contributions that it intends to achieve. It also established an enhanced transparency framework for action and support, as well as a global stocktake process and compliance mechanism. Similarly, it established a global goal on adaptation, for enhancing adaptive capacity, strengthening resilience, and reducing vulnerability to climate change in the context of sustainable development and temperature goals.
