National Irrigation Master Plan, 2016 (Bhutan)

The main objective of the National Irrigation Master Plan (NIMP) of Bhutan is to present a 15-year action plan and roadmap for the development of climate adaptive irrigation systems and irrigated agriculture in the country to help attain broad agriculture sector goals of food and nutrition security and enhanced rural incomes. The NMIP presents the assessment of the baseline situation, enabling environment and available resources (land and water). The NIMP then proceeds to present the road map for irrigation and institutional development. The NIMP also presents possible irrigation technologies following international best practices. It also presents pipeline projects and subprojects for irrigation development, project costing, benefit assessment, investment plan, economic evaluation, monitoring and evaluation plan, and recommendations.

In order to achieve the food security targets, an irrigation development road map was designed with four main components, namely:

  1. Infrastructure development
  2. Land development and agricultural mechanization
  3. Integrated crop and water management
  4. Institutional development
