The Constitution of Tonga
The fundamental law of Tonga consists of a Declaration of Rights, the Form of Government, and the Land. The Declaration of Rights include:
- A declaration of freedom
- Prohibition against slavery
- Equality under the law for all classes
- Freedom of worship
- Sabbath day as a holy day
- Freedom of the press
- Freedom of petition
- Right of habeas corpus
- Rights of an accused
- Right against unreasonable searches
The government is in the form of a Constitutional Monarchy, and is divided into three bodies namely, the Cabinet, Legislative Assembly and Judiciary. The constitution also expressly provides that the land is the property of the king and its sale is prohibited.
