Karen Bubna-Litic

Karen Bubna-Litic is an Associate Professor in the School of Law at the University of South Australia (UNISA)and a member of the IUCN Commission of Environmental Law. Karen was an inaugural member of the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law’s Teaching and Capacity Building Committee from 2007-2014 and has served as co-chair with Associate Professor Lye Lin Heng from 2008-2011. While co-chair, Karen co-wrote the initial version of the TTT programme with Professors Ben Boer and Rob Fowler.

She has been a visiting professor at the Boalt School of Law, UC (Berkeley) (1995), the School of Environmental Negotiation, University of Virginia (1999) and the Program for Research and Documentation for a Sustainable Society at the University of Oslo (2006). In 2010 she was a visiting professor at the University of Ottawa, the University of Cape Town, North-West University and the University of Maastricht.

Karen has more than 20 years experience in the development and teaching of environmental law courses both in Australia and overseas. She has published extensively in this area where her focus has been on corporate environmental responsibility and climate change law. Her research includes book chapters/ articles on ecotaxation, environmental reporting, the link between sustainability and corporate practice, climate change and economic incentives, and the social justice outcomes of carbon pricing policy, with particular reference to indigenous communities. Her current research focuses on wind energy policy and she has just completed a project for the IUCN on objective evaluation of environmental law principles in natural resources management. She has been a board member of the Environmental Defenders Office of South Australia since 2013 and is currently an external examiner for University College London’s Masters in Energy and Resources.
