Team Leader, ADB Environment and Climate Change Judicial Capacity Building Program (Consultant)
Briony Eales specializes in climate, environmental, social, and governance law. She is the team leader for judicial capacity building in environmental and climate change law at the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The program has been instrumental in supporting judicial exchanges across Asia and the Pacific through the creation of the Asian Judges Network on the Environment and regional judicial conferences. Within the program, Briony leads the development of a judicial curriculum and training on environmental law, emphasizing teaching legal syllogism and case management in environmental law. Briony also spearheads collaboration with UNEP and IUCN on regional Pacific judicial exchanges and dispute mechanisms.
Briony was the editor-in-chief and a lead author of Climate Change, Coming Soon to a Court Near You, ADB's four-part climate law report series. The reports explore climate change law, policy, and litigation in Asia and the Pacific. Briony also contributed to ADB’s 2021 report, Gender-Inclusive Legislative Framework and Laws to Strengthen Women’s Resilience to Climate Change and Disasters. Briony has advised public and private sector clients for 25 years in Australia and Asia. Her work has included updates to national climate law, climate change strategy, and laws on environmental crime. She has also advised corporate entities on resettlement, environmental and social impacts, engaging with indigenous communities, governance, and risk.
