On 13–15 January 2025, in Phnom Penh, ADB and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), in collaboration with the Cambodia Trade Training and Research Institute, co-organized an executive training on Negotiating and Drafting Rules of Origin for Cambodia, supported by the ADB Office of the General Counsel's Strengthening Knowledge in Regional Trade Agreements and International Investment Agreements Technical Assistance under the Law and Policy Reform Program.

The training brought together 66 participants including government officials, private sector leaders and development partners to enhance Cambodia’s trade negotiation capacities and prepare for its graduation from Least Developed Country (LDC) status. Participants explored the technicalities of rules of origin, their economic impacts, and engaged in practical negotiation simulations.

H.E. Puthsodary Tat, Secretary of State, delivered opening remarks, underscoring the importance of capacity building for Cambodia’s trade future. The event featured a unique blend of expertise: technical insights from Stefano Inama (UNCTAD) and Pramila Crivelli (Economic Research and Development Impact Department, ADB); real-world negotiation experiences shared by H.E. Ambassador Suon Prasith and Counsellor Imsouchivy Suos; and practical private sector perspectives from Jon Edwards (A&J Bicycle Co.) and Massimo Trabucco (Nestlé).

This event marks a significant step in building Cambodia’s capacity for a smooth and sustainable LDC transition, equipping stakeholders with the tools to navigate global trade challenges effectively.
