ADB joins policy dialogue on climate change, water and forests in Brasilia
On 23 August 2024, ADB General Counsel Thomas M. Clark joined senior government officials, high court justices and legal and climate experts at the International Symposium on Climate Change, Water and Forests, sponsored by the Brazilian Foreign Affairs and Finance Ministries, the National High Court of Brazil and the IUCN World Commission on Environmental Law. As Brazil serves as the current G20 Presidency, and will be hosting COP 30 next year, the Symposium focused on ways the legal system, and specifically the role of judges, could support the development of holistic approaches to climate-related legal issues, address the inter-related threats of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution, and facilitate the mobilization of private sector capital to finance the needed investments in green technologies and climate resilient infrastructure.
ADB General Counsel joined Brazilian Finance Ministry Chief Legal Counsel Fernanda Santiago, and Director of the BNDES Amazon Fund Nabil Kadri on a panel which discussed the specific measures development finance institutions could take, both operationally, and in terms of promoting policy reforms, to drive better solutions for climate-related risks.
