Tonga Climate Change Policy: A Resilient Tonga by 2035 (2016)

The Tonga Climate Change Policy aims to provide a clear vision, goal and objectives to respond to climate change over the next five years. The Policy is intended as an overarching context and guiding framework with policy objectives requiring multi-sector coordination. It recognizes that climate change is the single biggest issue that will determine the future of Tonga and will require a "whole of Tonga" level of cooperation and coordination. In the context of the policy, "resilience" encompasses an integrated approach to adaptation, disaster risk reduction and mitigation. The approach is intended to be multi-faceted, cross-sectoral, gender inclusive, equitable and with a strong emphasis on community ownership supported by strong governance. The Policy is strongly aligned with the seven National Outcomes enunciated in the Tonga Strategic Development Framework II (TSFG II), and particularly the sixth outcome of a more inclusive, sustainable and effective land administration, environment management, and resilience to climate and risk. The Policy is likewise aligned with regional policies such as the Strategy for Climate and Disaster Resilient Development in the Pacific, as well as with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
