Tile Til Eo 2050 Climate Strategy "Lighting the Way," 2018 (Marshall Islands)

The Strategy, in order to realize the goal of the Republic of the Marshall Islands' (RMI) net zero emissions by 2050 and 100% renewable energy, sets out certain recommendations including submitting by 2020 at the latest, a new Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) which revises its economy-wide target to reduce by 2025 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 32% below 2010 levels and commits to a quantified economy-wide target to reduce by 2030 GHG emissions to at least 45% below 2010 levels. RMI shall also focus in the short and medium-term on its electricity sector to implement GHG reductions consistent with achieving its NDC targets. RMI shall also act to reduce its growing waste problem by minimizing organic material in collected waste and consider possibilities to generate energy from waste. It will develop policies to encourage a greater use of public transport, cycling and walking, and the increased uptake of electric vehicles, as well as explore options to reduce GHG emissions from domestic ocean-based transport, including improved regulatory control. It will likewise continue efforts to phase out the use of kerosene for lighting and strengthen existing institutional arrangements to reduce GHGs from cooking and lighting.
