Thailand Power Development Plan 2015−2036

The Thailand Power Development Plan 2015-2036 focuses on the following: 1. Energy Security: dealing with an increase in power demand taking into account fuel diversification to lessen the dependency of one particular fuel, 2. Economy: maintaining an appropriate cost of power generation and implementing energy efficiency, 3. Ecology: reducing environmental and social impacts by lessening carbon dioxide intensity of power generation. According to the Plan, by 2036, the total capacity would be 70,335 MW comprising existing capacity of 37,612 MW (as of December 2014), new capacity of 57,459 MW, and retired capacity during 2015-2036 of 24,736 MW. Moreover, renewable energy (e.g., municipal waste, biomass, biogas, wind and solar power generation) will be encouraged according to the AEDP. Investments in transmission and distribution systems will accommodate renewable energy and smart-grid development. The Plan likewise sets targets carbon intensity. For the amount of carbon dioxide emission per unit, the target starts at 0.399 khCO2/kWH in 2021 and decrease to reach 0.319 in 2036. For the amount to carbon dioxide emission per annum, the target starts at 93,689 thousand tons of CO2 in 2021 to reach 104,075 thousand tons of CO2 in 2036.
