The Right to Food and Food Sovereignty Act, 2075 (2018) (Nepal)

The Act enunciates the right of every citizen to food and food security, including the right to have regular access to nutritious and quality food, to be free from hunger, to be safe from scarcity of food, to obtain sustainable access to food and nutrition and to use culturally acceptable food. To this end, the Act defines the specific functions and powers of the Government of Nepal, the Provincial Government, and Local Level for the prevention and control of famine. Among these measures are the identification of targeted households that are vulnerable to food insecurity, the issuance of a food support identity card, the provision of food support to targeted households for a concessional price, and the prescription of standards on the required nutritious elements in food.

The Act also requires the promotion of livelihood of the farmers and the promotion of local agro-crops and livestock products. The Government of Nepal shall also prepare a National Food Plan for the purposes set out in the Act.
