Republic of Fiji National Climate Change Policy, 2012 (Fiji)

The Climate Change Policy 2012 of Fiji adheres to the policy vision of a responsible and exemplary Fiji, leading the Pacific in combating climate change and achieving resilience, while attaining sustainable development. 

The Policy is geared towards the mission: 

  1. To increase Fiji’s capacity to cope with the impacts of climate change by strengthening institutional and legal frameworks, providing sound scientific information, and implementing effective awareness and education initiatives.
  2. To maximize access to and secure globally available financing for climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts.
  3. To strengthen Fiji’s support towards neighboring Pacific Island countries that are highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.
  4. To strengthen engagement in international climate change policy processes and fulfil obligations on climate change mitigation and adaptation. 

Further, the Policy is guided by the principles of long-term sustainability, an integrated approach, community ownership, strategic partnerships, scientifically sound and appropriate information, reporting and feedback mechanisms, monitoring and evaluation, equity and fairness, practical, affordable and appropriate solutions, gender consideration, incorporating lessons learned, and international collaboration.
