Papua New Guinea's Enhanced Nationally Determined Contribution 2020

Papua New Guinea's (PNG) Enhanced Nationally Determined Contribution 2020 (NDC) aligns with sectoral policies, plans and strategies, as well as existing challenges and circumstances. This improves on the existing NDC which is aligned with national strategies. PNG's enhanced NDC outlines a comprehensive set of policies and measures, sectoral targets and sector-specific action steering PNG towards meeting defined contributions to climate change response through immediate action, as well as enabling environment and technical capacity for an ongoing process of increased ambition. The NDC sets out a roadmap toward sustainable development, with the core initiative of maintaining PNG's high forest cover and reducing emissions from two out of four emitting sectors in PNG (i.e., agriculture, forestry, and other land use and energy sectors). On the other hand, adaptation is also prioritized due to the climate-related hazards that pose significant risks to PNG. Thus, the NDC commits to adaptation focusing on agriculture, health, transport and infrastructure.
