Papua New Guinea National Energy Policy, 2017-2027

The overarching objective of the National Energy Policy is to ensure affordable, competitive, sustainable and reliable supply of energy to meet provincial development needs at least cost, while protecting and conserving the environment. The Policy envisions of improved quality of life for every citizen and provides a platform for strong economic growth through sustainable development of the energy sector in line with Vision 2050. It identifies principles to steer the Policy in achieving its objectives, including (i) strengthening institutional capacity and recruit appropriate human resources to manage the Energy Sector; (ii) developing an integrated planning process for sustainable energy supply and utilization; (iii) all energy resources to be developed by the State for the betterment of all citizens; (iv) promoting a conducive environment for long-term sustainable economic solutions in the supply of all energy sources; (v) encouraging involvement of the private sector in the development and provision of energy infrastructure and services; (vi) ensuring energy resources are developed and delivered in an environmentally sustainable manner; (vii) promoting efficient systems and safety in energy supply in all sectors (transport, residential, commercial, industrial and agriculture); (viii) diversify the cost-effective development and utilization of energy resources for the nation’s well-being and economic prosperity; and (ix) promote energy efficiency and conservation measures and wise use of energy.
