Navigating Our Energy Future: Marshall Islands' Electricity Roadmap, 2018

The Roadmap holds a key role in achieving the Republic of the Marshall Islands' (RMI) Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). Under the NDC, the electricity sector must reduce diesel use by at least 50% below 2010 levels by 2025, and 65% by 2030. The NDC further committed to net zero emissions/100% renewable energy by 2050. The Roadmap thus defines greenhouse gas targets for the RMI electricity sector and develops technical options to move closer to such targets. The RMI is intentionally ambitious with its targets to lead the transition to a low-carbon word. In the same vein, it aims to enable the major grids of Majuro and Ebeye to run in "diesel-off" mode, while maintaining reliability of supply.

Achievement of its targets requires reducing generation and supply losses, improving energy efficiency, installing wind and solar generation, as well as associated enabling technologies. In addition to supporting the achievement of climate change targets of RMI, the Roadmap addresses the need to improve affordability, energy efficiency, energy security, reliability of service and quality of life.
