National Strategy for Disaster Risk Management in Nepal, 2009 (Unofficial Translation)

The National Strategy for Disaster Risk Management is a national framework with commitment of the Government of Nepal for protection, growth, and promotion of national heritage and physical infrastructure. The absence of mainstreaming disaster reduction in the development process in the past resulted in the loss of physical properties and human lives, and destruction of basic infrastructures. Thousands of people face tragic consequences of the annual recurrence of disasters such as floods, landslides, fires, etc. This Strategy Paper is an integrated effort on reducing disaster risk in the days ahead through materialization of spirit of participation. In the process, effort is made by defining five main priorities and associated activities by assigning responsibilities to each sector line agency. The long-term vision of this Strategy is to establish Nepal as a disaster-resilient community. Its long-term mission is to provide guidance and ensure effective disaster management through development and implementation of the concept of effective preparedness for mitigation, disaster risk reduction and incidence of calamities.
