National REDD+ Strategy 2017–2027, National Executive Council decision No. 126/2017, 2017 (Papua New Guinea)

The National REDD+ Strategy articulates Papua New Guinea's (PNG) vision for REDD+ to catalyze transformational change within the forest and land use sector towards a new and responsible economy with lower greenhouse gas emissions, stronger long term economic growth and community livelihoods and the effective conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem services while ensuring that Papua New Guinea's forest resources are used in a sustainable and equitable manner for the benefit of current and future generations. The Strategy also recognizes that REDD+ is not merely an activity but a goal that should be attained as part of PNG's sustainable and responsible development. This is possible by creating the enabling conditions for actions by government, civil society and private sector; and mainstreaming the concepts and goals of REDD+ into the work of sectors and developing policies and measures that drive actions at the national, provincial and local levels to reduce emissions and enhance PNG's forests. The Strategy submits that this approach will support PNG's development targets and bring about a transformation in land use development to steer the country to a low emission and green development path.
