National Protected Area Strategic Management Plan, 2017-2031 (Cambodia)

The National Protected Area Strategic Management Plan (NPASMP) is intended to guide the future planning and management of individual protected areas. The vision of the NPASMP is for Cambodia’s protected area system to contribute to the country’s economy and sustainable development, including poverty reduction, through the conservation and sustainable use of its biological, natural and cultural resources and other ecosystem services. It aims to achieve the most effective, efficient and equitable management of the national protected area system in Cambodia. Among its goals are:

  • Maintaining and enhancing the ecological and cultural values of protected areas
  • Promoting participatory community engagement and support for conservation management
  • Developing innovative approaches to conservation and development, including opportunities for sustainable ecotourism and financing mechanisms
  • Providing accurate, timely and relevant information for effective management of protected areas
  • Strengthening protected area management effectiveness and working partnerships with government agencies, local authorities, conservation NGOs, and development partners

It identifies four Strategic Objectives, namely:

  1. Prioritize and Strengthen Conservation
  2. Enhance Sustainable Management
  3. Expand Community Participation and Benefits
  4. Strengthen Institutional Capacity and Collaboration
