National Policy on Climate Change, 2009 (Malaysia)

The objectives of the National Policy on Climate Change (NPCC) are: 

  • Mainstreaming climate change through wise management of resources and enhanced environmental conservation resulting in strengthened economic competitiveness and improved quality of life
  • Integration of responses into national policies, plans and programmes to strengthen the resilience of development from arising and potential impacts of climate change
  • Strengthening of institutional and implementation capacity to better harness opportunities to reduce negative impacts of climate change

The NPCC aims to realize national aspirations for sustainable development by ensuring climate-resilient development. The national direction in the response to climate change is embodied in Policy's five principles anchoring 10 strategic thrusts. In the Policy, Malaysia recognizes the adverse effects and impacts of climate change and undertakes to mainstream national responses that consolidate economic, social and environmental development goals based on the following principles: 

  1. Development on a sustainable path
  2. Conservation of environment and natural resources
  3. Coordinated implementation
  4. Effective participation
  5. Common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities

The Policy also identifies 21 key actions to be implemented.
