National Framework for Climate Change and Climate Change Adaptation, 2013 (Kiribati)

The National Framework for Climate Change and Climate Adaptation extends the 2005 Climate Change Adaptation Strategy. Under the strategy, the action to fortify Kiribati's capability to meet the challenge of climate change is outlined under six headings:

  1. Mitigation
  2. Integration of climate change and climate change adaptation into national planning and institutional capacity
  3. External financial and technical assistance
  4. Population and resettlement
  5. Governance and services
  6. Survivability and self-reliance

It addresses three main issues that Kiribati must confront, namely:

  1. Rising sea levels
  2. Increasing sea-surface temperatures
  3. Changes to weather patterns

It adopts a cross-sectoral approach, and recognizes that climate change is a major threat to Kiribati's environmental, social and economic development. It advocates integration of climate change into national planning and institutional capacity building, with all stakeholders involved in climate change adaptation activities at all levels.
