National Disaster Risk Management Act 2016 (Nauru)

The National Disaster Risk Management Act of the Republic of Nauru repeals and replaces the National Disaster Risk Management Act of 2008. This Act provides for disaster risk management in Nauru, establishing the National Emergency Services, the national disaster risk committee and the National Disaster Risk Management Council (Council). The Secretary for National Emergency Services has the function of coordinating the rescue and fire, ambulance, life guard, and meteorology services in Nauru, as well as coordinate, maintain, and facilitate implementation and review of the National Disaster Risk Management Plan. It is also mandated to issue early warning messages of potential threats, as well as provide Disaster Risk Management advice and support to the Council, among others. The Secretary is also mandated to undertake periodic audits of all Government Agencies to determine their preparedness levels and whether they have taken the necessary steps to implement the National Disaster Risk Management Plan and to report on its findings to the Council. The Council has the overall responsibility for disaster management and emergency responses during disaster, and is empowered to formulate policy for disaster risk reduction and disaster management, as well as approve the disaster risk management plan, among others.
