National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (Maldives)
The National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) 2016-2025 seeks to ensure that threats to biodiversity are addressed, biodiversity is conserved, sustainably used and benefits arising from them are shared equitably.
The NBSAP is composed of three guiding principles, namely:
- The people of this generation and the generations to come reserves the right to access and share benefits of rich biodiversity and ecosystem services.
- Responsibility of conserving and sustainability using biodiversity lies on everyone's shoulders and shall be taken as a shared responsibility.
- Biodiversity shall be mainstreamed into all sectors and in a manner whereby monitoring progress and accountability is ensured.
It encompasses a 10-year plan and is designed to address six broad areas of concern. It also sets out strategies to achieve the targets for the areas of concern, including:
- Strengthening governance policies and strategies for biodiversity
- Enhancing communication and outreach through awareness programs and capacity building
- Working together globally for biodiversity conservation
- Ensuring sustainable use of biological resources
- Addressing threats to conserve biodiversity
- Strengthening information management
- Resource mobilization
