The National Biodiversity Strategic Action Plan 2016-2020 (Solomon Islands)

The National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) 2016 to 2020 is a response of Solomon Islands to the challenges facing the country's biodiversity such as habitat loss, overexploitation and climate change. The document attempts to identify, prioritize and set biodiversity targets for the country for the next five (5) years in line with the Aichi biodiversity targets. Fourteen (14) priority areas are identified together with 15 targets established to provide the government with a framework for the sustainable use and management of the country's biodiversity. 

The priority areas identified are:

  1. Environmental education and public awareness
  2. Governance, compliances and enforcement
  3. Sustainable finance
  4. Research, traditional, knowledge, science, information system and technology
  5. Marine and coastal biodiversity
  6. Agro-biodiversity
  7. Forest, mountain and plant genetic biodiversity
  8. Waste, pollution and biodiversity
  9. Invasive alien species
  10. Climate change, disaster risk management and natural infrastructure
  11. Protected area systems
  12. Endemic, threatened and migratory species
  13. Inland water biodiversity
  14. Access and benefit sharing
