National Adaptation Programmes of Action, 2008 (Solomon Islands)

The National Adaptation Programmes of Action (NAPA) embodies the adaptation strategy of the Solomon Islands. The need to implement adaptation urgently in Solomon Islands is reinforced by adverse impacts which are already being experienced in the low-lying coastal country, as well as the fact that climate change will be a major impediment to the achievement of sustainable development in the country that is a Least Development Country and Small Island Developing State.

The NAPA looks into key vulnerabilities of the country organized by key sectors:

  • Agriculture
  • Water resources
  • Energy
  • Human health
  • Mining
  • Fisheries and marine resources
  • Human settlements, infrastructure
  • Forestry
  • Waste
  • Education
  • Environment
  • Tourism

The NAPA further identifies, based on a consultative process, priority activities addressing the urgent and immediate needs and concerns of Solomon Islands in order to adapt to the adverse effects of climate change. The NAPA then sets out the implementation strategy for the activities identified.
