National Adaptation Programme for Action (NAPA), 2007 (Vanuatu)

The objective of the National Adaptation Programme of Action (NAPA) project for Vanuatu is to formulate a national programme for the immediate and urgent adaptation activities in priority sectors. This is a necessary response to the adverse effects of climate change. A comprehensive assessment was undertaken on the information regarding Vanuatu’s vulnerability to climate change and of the activities and measures needed to enhance the resilience of the most threatened parts of Vanuatu’s natural heritage, society and economy. Inputs from relevant government agencies, provincial governments, non-government organizations and communities were considered. Main climate issues and possible adaptation options were identified, from which a list of adaptation strategies was identified.

With further prioritization and screening, a final list of projects for Vanuatu was determined as follows:

  1. Agriculture and food security (preservation/processing/marketing, modern and traditional practices, and bartering)
  2. Water management policies/programmes (including rainwater harvesting)
  3. Sustainable tourism
  4. Community-based marine resource management programmes (modern and traditional, aqua-culture)
  5. Sustainable forestry management
