Melanie Soebono vs. The President of Indonesia, et al.

Petitioners filed a case against government officials in Indonesia for their alleged negligence in fulfilling petitioners' right to a good and healthy environment. The petitioners contend that government regulations at the national and city level are too lenient, and need better supervision and sanctions for offenders. The respondents include the President, the Minister of Environment and Forestry, Minister of Home Affairs, Minister of Health, and the Governors of Jakarta, Banten and West Java.  The Panel of Judges of the Central Jakarta District Court held that the State had committed unlawful acts that resulted in environmental damage and pollution. The respondents were directed to establish a national ambient air quality standard that is sufficient to protect human health, the environment and ecosystems, and the health of sensitive groups within the populations based on developments in science and technology.
