Maldives National Strategy for Sustainable Development, 2009

The National Sustainable Development Strategy (NSDS) of Maldives sets out the strategy on how the country will fulfill its commitment to meet the challenges of sustainable development. The overall aim of the NSDS is to identify and develop actions to enable the people of Maldives to achieve continuing improvement in their quality of life both now and in the future - promoting both intra- and inter-generational equity.

The National Sustainable Development Goals enunciated in the NSDS include:

  • Adapting to climate change
  • Protecting coral reefs
  • Achieving carbon neutrality in energy
  • Ensuring food security
  • Establishing a carbon neutral transport system
  • Protecting public health and achieving full employment
  • Ensuring social security

The NSDS recognizes the role of economic development in facilitating the transition to a more sustainable society, and that investments in human, social, natural and produced capital as well as technological innovation are the prerequisites for long-term competitiveness and economic prosperity, social cohesion, quality employment and better environmental protection.
