Law on Protection of Children and Young People in Danger, Law No. 6/2023 (Timor-Leste)
The Law on Protection of Children and Young People in Danger promotes the rights and protection of children and young people in danger, in order to ensure their well-being and integral development. The law authorizes intervention to promote the rights and protection of children and young people in danger when the parents, legal representative, or the de facto guardian of the child or young person endangers, or is unable to remove or oppose danger to their life, physical or mental integrity, safety, health, training, education or development.
The law provides for different intervention modalities and competent authorities. It also provides for various measures to promote the rights and protection of children and young people, including support measures, foster care, reception measures in institutions, and promotion and protection agreements. The law also sets out the rights of the child or young person in foster care. It also outlines the procedures when intervention by the prosecution office or a judicial process is warranted, including emergency procedures.
