Law on Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics, 2009 (Malaysia)

The objectives of the Law on Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics are:

  • Supporting the safety of life and property
  • Protection of national interests and potential in order to increase security and resilience
  • Increasing autonomy in the mastery and application of science and technology in the field of meteorology, climatology and Geophysics
  • Supporting the national development policy in order to realize the welfare of society
  • Improving the information service to become fast, precise, accurate and easy to understand
  • Environmental sustainability
  • International cooperation

The law provides for the organization and government agency in charge of meteorology, climatology and geophysics. It also mandates that meteorological observation should be made against solar radiation, air temperature, air pressure, wind, air humidity, clouds, rain, ocean waves, surface temperature of sea water, and tides. Observations should also include air pollution elements such as particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide and nitrogen dioxide, ozone, carbon monoxide, and chemical composition of rain water. Also for observation are greenhouse gas elements including carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, hydrofluorocarbons, perfluorokarbon and sulfur hexafluoride. Geophysical observation must also be made including gravity, kemagnetan of the earth, position of the Moon and the Sun, determination of the time system, the tsunami, and electrical waves.
