Kiribati Integrated Energy Roadmap 2017−2025, 2017

The Roadmap reinforces that the power sector is a pivotal area and supports the ongoing efforts to deploy solar photovoltaic (PV) technology, complemented by improving energy efficiency. The development of coconut oil as an alternative fuel to diesel should be further developed, in addition to solar PV and wind energy, so as to ensure sustainable energy supply using renewable and local sources.

The Roadmap identifies challenges to the sustainability of the energy sector in Kiribati, such as:

  • Dependency on energy imports
  • Stable or declining total energy demand
  • High government expenditure on energy
  • Significant loss of revenue
  • Significant non-technical electricity losses
  • Inadequacy of current fossil fuel-based power system
  • The need for modernization

Corresponding solutions are proposed including:

  • Optimizing and reducing fossil fuel use
  • Expanding the efficient use of indigenous renewable energy resources
  • Introducing new technologies to the Kiribati energy sector
