Kiribati Climate Change Policy, 2018

The Kiribati Climate Change Policy is anchored on the vision that the Republic of Kiribati, its people, culture and economy will remain resilient and viable in facing the challenges of climate change. Its avowed mission is to safeguard the present and future existence of Kiribati as a sovereign nation and its people, culture, environment, development progress and aspirations in light of the impacts of climate change and related disaster risks. The Policy is intended to strategically guide and support decision-making processes and sets the direction for enhanced coordination and scaled-up implementation of climate change adaptation, mitigation and disaster risk reduction. The Policy aims to support the Kiribati 20-Year Vision and the Kiribati Development Plan by ensuring that climate change action, mitigation and disaster risk mitigation are aligned with the vision and direction of these development plans. It identifies national priorities for climate change including coastal protection and infrastructure, food security, water security, energy security, health security, disaster risk management, unavoidable climate change impact, capacity building and education, and climate finance.
