Joint National Action Plan 2 on Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management 2018-2028 (Tonga)

The Joint National Action Plan 2 (JNAP II) on Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management has the mission, aligned with the Tonga Climate Change Policy, to develop a resilient Tonga through an inclusive, participatory approach that is based on good governance, knowledge building, proactive communities and supports a strong, sustainable development pathway. Similarly, the JNAP II seeks to achieve the vision of Resilient Tonga by 2035.

Thus, the objectives of the Tonga Climate Change Policy are likewise the objectives of the JNAP II, namely:

  1. Mainstreaming for a resilient Tonga
  2. Research, monitoring and management of data and information
  3. Resilience-building response capacity
  4. Resilience-building actions
  5. Finance
  6. Regional and international cooperation

The six objectives form a coherent and strategically focused whole of Tonga approach to build resilience over the next decade. The approach aligns strongly with the Framework for Resilient Development in the Pacific and with international agreements and frameworks including the Paris Agreement under the Unites Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Sendai Framework, the Montreal Protocol, the Sustainable Development Goals as well as the Samoa Pathway.
