Intended Nationally Determined Contribution, 2016 (Kiribati)

Kiribati, in its Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC), commits to reduce emissions by 13.7% by 2025 and 12.8% by 2030 compared to a business as usual projection. Moreover, Kiribati will proactively protect and sustainably manage its mangrove resources, as well as protect and enhance coastal vegetation and seagrass beds. Together, these actions represent effective stewardship of more than six million tons of Carbon Dioxide stored, more than 100 times the current annual national emission inventory. Furthermore, with appropriate international assistance, Kiribati submits that it can reduce its emissions by 61.8% by 2030. The INDC includes fossil fuels and marine sequestration, and covers the energy sector including energy and transport. In terms of adaptation, the INDC presents an analysis of vulnerable sectors and segments of society. It concludes that the most serious long-term concern is the threat of sea-level rise to the existence of Kiribati as a nation. On the medium term, threats to water supply and food production are areas of concern. The INDC sets out adaptation policy and programmes addressing climate change impacts and related environmental issues.
