Global Compact on Refugees

The Global Compact on Refugees provides for the sharing of burdens and responsibilities among United Nations Member States and relevant stakeholders. These include international organizations, other humanitarian and development actors, international and regional financial institutions, regional organizations, local authorities, civil society, faith-based organizations, academics, private sector, media, host communities, and refugees themselves. While not legally binding, it represents the political will and ambition of the international community, and will be operationalized through voluntary contributions to achieve collective outcomes and move closer to its objectives. The global compact has four interlinked and interdependent objectives, namely, (i) ease pressures on host communities, (ii) enhance refugee self-reliance, (iii) expand access to third country solutions, and (iv) support conditions in countries of origin for return in safety and dignity. The Compact notes that climate, environmental degradation and natural disasters, although not causes of refugee movement, increasingly interact with drivers of such movement.
