Forest Research Institute Malaysia Act, 2016

The Act provides for the continued existence of the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia and the dissolution of the Malaysian Forestry Research and Development Board. The functions of the Forest Research Institute shall include:

  • Implementing policies on research and development programmes to ensure the growth and sustainability of the forest and forest-based industries, as well as the multiple roles and functions of forests including watershed, biotechnology, biodiversity, conservation, and ecotourism.
  • To conduct and promote research on forest development including production, extraction, processing, storage, transportation and utilization of forest produce.
  • To provide technical, advisory and consultancy services in relation to forest and forest-based industries to any government, body or organization.
  • To act as testing body for forest produce upon accreditation.
  • To liaise and coordinate with the Federal or State Governments or any body or organization on the research and development programmes in the interest of the forest. 

The Act provides for the administrative structure of the Institute including its Chairman, Director General, Deputy Director General, and other members. It also provides for the establishment of the Forest Research Institute Malaysia Fund.
