Food Act of Bhutan, 2005

The Act established the National Food Quality and Safety Commission which is mandated to formulate policies on industry development, consumer protection, fostering trade and improving food control in the Kingdom of Bhutan, among others.

It further established the Bhutan Agriculture and Food Regulatory Authority and the National Codex Committee. It provided rules on food inspectors and analysts, which allow them to seize, mark and seal food, and/or issue written notice temporarily ordering the removal of food during instances when it is discovered that such food is unfit for human consumption. In case of a clear and present danger to human health or the environment, food inspectors can immediately destroy or order the destruction of unsafe food.

The Act also provided the rules and regulations on the import and export of food, as well as the enforcement of the provisions thereof.
