Environment (Amendment) Act 2007, Kiribati
This Act amends the Environment Act of 1999. Among the significant amendments is the inclusion of a part on Obligations, which expressly requires or prohibits certain acts. The Act contains a provision on pollution, particularly providing the correct manner of disposal of litter. It requires keeping pig premises clean. It prohibits excessive emissions from vehicles, pollution of waters, dumping of waste or other matter in a sea or lagoon, and pollution from private premises or in a public place, as well as a duty clean-up the environment. Failure to comply with the mandated or prohibited acts shall be subjected to penalties of fine and/or imprisonment. It requires that environmental licenses must be secured for environmentally-significant activities. The Act also provides for conservation of coral reefs, mangroves and sea grass beds, harming-protected species or their nests.
