Energy Charter Protocol on Energy Efficiency and Related Environmental Aspects

The Energy Charter Protocol on Energy Efficiency and Related Environmental Aspects defines policy principles for the promotion of energy efficiency as a significant source of energy and for consequently reducing adverse environmental impacts of energy systems. It provides guidance on developing energy efficiency programmes, indicating possible areas of cooperation and a framework for development of cooperative action. The objectives of the Protocol include:

  • The promotion of energy efficiency policies consistent with sustainable development.
  • The creation of framework conditions to induce producers and consumers to use energy as economically, efficiently, and environmentally sound as possible through efficient energy markets and a fuller reflection of environmental costs and benefits.
  • Fostering of cooperation in the field of energy efficiency.
