Electricity Supply Act, 1990 (Malaysia)

The Electricity Supply Act of Malaysia provides for the regulation of the electricity supply industry, the supply of electricity at reasonable prices, the licensing of electrical installation, control of electrical installation, plant and equipment regarding safety to persons, and the efficient use of electricity. The Act sets out functions and duties which must be carried out by the Energy Commission including the issuance of licenses for electrical installations, exercise of regulatory functions, promotion of competition in generation and supply of electricity, secure that all reasonable demands for electricity are satisfied, to provide the minimum standards and specifications for electrical installations and equipment, among others. The Act also provides for the powers of enforcement, investigation and certain offenses. It provides for the fixing and approval of tariffs which may be imposed by a licensee, and allows a licensee to levy surcharges, recover expenses and require security.
