Electricity Act, 2001 (Singapore)

The Electricity Act governs the licensing of activities relating to electricity including electricity licenses and service licenses. The Act empowers the Energy Market Authority to grant licenses for generation, transmission, retailing, import or export, providing market support services and trading in and operating any wholesale electricity market. It contains provisions on the application requirements, exemptions and restrictions on transfer, modification and revocation of electricity licenses, as well as the conditions, powers and duties of electricity licensees. It specifically prohibits engaging in the aforementioned activities without an electricity license unless exempted under the law. The Act provides for the wholesale electricity market functions and power of the Market Company. It further prohibits the prevention, restriction, or distortion of competition in any wholesale market or retail electricity market in Singapore. The Act also identifies offenses relating to its provisions, as well as penalties therefor.
