The Constitution of Vanuatu
The fundamental law of Vanuatu recognizes the fundamental rights of individuals including:
- The right to life
- Liberty
- Security of the person
- Protection of the law
- Freedom from inhumane treatment and forced labor
- Freedom of conscience and worship
- Freedom of expression
- Freedom of assembly and association
- Freedom of movement
- Right to privacy
- Right to equal treatment under the law
It also provides for fundamental duties which are non-justiciable but compliance with which will be encouraged by public authorities. It defines citizenship in Vanuatu and the form of government. It also has a chapter on land which provides that land belongs to custom owner, in addition to the government having authority to acquire land for public interest.
